What is Non-Emergency Medical Transportation
Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) refers to transportation services provided to individuals who need medical care but do not require emergency ambulance services. These services are typically used by patients who have mobility challenges, lack access to a personal vehicle, or need specialized transport to attend medical appointments, dialysis treatments, physical therapy, or other healthcare-related visits.
Key Features of NEMT:
- For Non-Emergency Situations – Unlike emergency medical services (EMS), NEMT is for scheduled, routine medical needs rather than urgent or life-threatening conditions.
- Specialized Vehicles – May include wheelchair-accessible vans, stretcher-equipped vehicles, or vehicles with trained drivers to assist patients.
- Eligibility – Often used by Medicaid beneficiaries, elderly individuals, or disabled persons who qualify for transportation assistance. Note: Agape Transportation does not accept Medicaid, Medicare, or any other types of insurance. But we will provide you with a Superbill that you can submit to your individual carrier for reimbursement as applicable.
- Types of Services – Ambulatory transportation, wheelchair transportation, stretcher services.
- Coverage & Payment – NEMT is often covered by Medicaid and some private insurance providers, though coverage varies by state and plan.
Who Uses NEMT?
- Seniors or disabled individuals needing assistance to reach medical appointments.
- Patients requiring regular treatments like dialysis, chemotherapy, or physical therapy.
- Individuals without reliable transportation who need to visit doctors, hospitals, or clinics.
NEMT helps reduce missed medical appointments, improves healthcare access, and ensures that patients receive necessary treatments without unnecessary stress.
